CREW volunteers work every month at the Sixth Street Shelter, an initiative of the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley. The shelter is a 20-unit apartment building in Allentown, PA where homeless families with children receive intensive programming to help them get back on their feet. Staff works with families to set and achieve specific goals. Adult family members attend classes on parenting, personal finance, life skills and preparation for General Equivalency Development (GED) test; youngsters participate in preschool and a variety of youth activities. CREW volunteers organize and run sessions for the youngsters and provide needed materials to the shelter.
The Community Service Committee also organizes Secret Santa holiday programs so members may give gifts to youngsters at the Children's Home of Easton and adopt families from Turning Point, a non-profit organization that provides refuge for victims of domestic abuse. The committee also organizes food drives to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley.
